Freshet News was founded in October 2025 by four veteran reporters who worked at the Burnaby NOW, New Westminster Record and Tri-City News. In April 2025, in the middle of the federal election, Glacier/Lodestar Media closed the three news outlets.
Freshet News aims to rebuild local news by providing coverage to 700,000 residents, businesses and groups in Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities through a twice-monthly newspaper distributed by a team of volunteers, a website, a Friday podcast and a Sunday newsletter. Freshet News is the first union-supported, non-profit news co-operative in Western Canada.
