BC Chamber of Commerce Welcomes George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project

This week, the provincial government announced that it is proceeding with a replacement of the George Massey Tunnel.

In response to the announcement, the BC Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Fiona Famulak, released the following statement:

“The BC Chamber of Commerce welcomes this week’s announcement that the Government of B.C. will replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with a new eight-lane tunnel that will significantly improve the flow of people, goods and services in the Lower Mainland and beyond.

British Columbia is Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and our economic competitiveness relies heavily on the well-maintained capacity within our port, air, rail, and roadway infrastructure. That’s why the BC Chamber of Commerce, along with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, Surrey Board of Trade, Delta Chamber of Commerce and Greater Vancouver Board of Trade have been calling for a replacement to the crossing as soon as possible [see "Expediting the George Massey Crossing Project (2020)"]

The George Massey infrastructure is a critical link in the Highway 99 trade corridor, connecting our region to the U.S. Interstate highway, the BC Ferries Terminal in Tsawwassen, the Deltaport container terminal, and Vancouver International Airport in Richmond. In addition to significant goods movement, up to 92,000 vehicles commute daily via this corridor, and the demand will continue to rise as the population South of the Fraser continues to increase.”
