BC Chamber of Commerce Statement on the Teck and Anglo American Merger
In reaction to the announcement earlier today by Teck Resources and Anglo American of their plans to merge, Alex McMillan, CEO (Interim) of the BC Chamber of Commerce, released the following statement:
“The BC Chamber of Commerce welcomes today’s announcement of the merger between Teck and Anglo American. The newly formed, Anglo Teck, will be one of the world’s largest critical mineral companies, combining the strengths of both organizations, creating long-term benefits for British Columbia’s mining sector and our provincial economy broadly.
“The BC Chamber of Commerce has been a consistent and vocal champion of the mining industry in British Columbia for decades; the industry supports tens of thousands of jobs in every corner of the province, rural and urban. We are pleased Teck Anglo has chosen to locate their headquarters here and their commitment to continued investments in Canadian mining assets is welcome news.
“We believe Anglo Teck will be an important piece of our economic foundation for the province. This announcement comes at an especially critical time when we are seeking to develop new relationships and opportunities to strengthen our economy. As a nation, we need to focus on economic growth and job creation, especially in the private sector. Ensuring we have strong and resilient companies based here, is going to be critical moving forward.
“The BC Chamber of Commerce noted the companies have reaffirmed their commitments to honour existing agreements with communities, Indigenous governments and labour contracts in Canada. Having operational and cultural stability and consistency will be critical to ensure a seamless transition to Anglo Teck within the communities where they operate.
