BC Chamber of Commerce Statement on Increase Softwood Tariffs
In response to yesterday’s increased softwood lumber tariffs on Canadian companies, Alex McMillan, CEO (Interim) of the BC Chamber of Commerce, released the following statement:
“The BC Chamber of Commerce is deeply concerned about the newest increase in duties imposed on Canadian softwood lumber producers by the United States. The current duty rates of over 35% were unwarranted and unjustified; the escalation of a further 10% increase, based on national security threats, are completely unreasonable and punitive.
“The BC Chamber of Commerce is adding our voice to those imploring the federal government to place increased urgency on finding a resolution to this file and demonstrate support for the workers, businesses and communities who are dependant on this critical industry. Too many jobs are at risk. The Government of Canada must move with speed to bring an end to this dispute.
“Forestry has been foundational for our province and could be for generations to come. Unfortunately, it has never been more threatened than it is today. We must do everything in our control to drive innovation, increase competitiveness and ensure we are maximizing the value of our forests for the people of British Columbia and the entire nation.”
